How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Our lasers target the melanin in the follicle and bulb of the hair, destroying it while leaving the skin unaffected. Because hairs are at different stages of their cycle at any time, multiple treatments are needed to catch them all.
The face usually takes five treatments four weeks apart. The body takes three or four sessions six weeks apart. Occasional touch-ups may be needed for hairs that grow back due to hormones.

Skin Types
Does Laser Hair Removal Work for All Skin Types?
Because lasers target melanin, skin type matters. Light skin with dark hair is ideal, since we can use the highest setting without risking the skin. Highly pigmented dark skin is riskier, but we have alternate machines that are safer for it. Light hair has very little melanin to target, and no method has been proven to treat it consistently. Before treatment, the hair must be clipped or shaved. Waxing removes the entire shaft, so there is nothing for the laser to treat and the growth stays unaffected.

Safe for all skin tones, with a hand piece for darker skin. It treats a larger area than most machines, which shortens the procedure.
Medlite
An Nd: YAG laser, the safest option for very dark skin. If you have darker skin or are prone to pigment abnormalities, it delivers a good result with low risk of complications.
Gentlelase
An Alexandrite laser, very effective on fair or light skin tones.

How does laser hair removal work?
The lasers we use for hair removal target the hair’s dark pigment, which absorbs the laser’s energy; destroying the hair follicle.
Are the results permanent?
Laser hair removal is Food and Drug Administration approved to produce permanent hair reduction. On average, 80 percent of patients see an 80 percent reduction in hair. Some do better, some do worse, and results cannot be guaranteed. Still, most patients are very satisfied. Results depend on hair and skin type, so a consultation with an experienced surgeon matters.
Who is the ideal candidate?
Fair skin with dark hair is ideal, because the laser can run at its strongest setting and only the dark hair absorbs the energy. Darker or tanned skin requires a lower setting, since the skin’s pigment also absorbs energy and could be damaged. We have lasers designed for darker skin that deliver excellent results as well.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are rare. Occasionally the skin darkens temporarily (hyperpigmentation), most often in darker-skinned patients. We avoid this with systems made for darker skin. Hyperpigmentation has occurred in less than 0.1 percent of patients treated at our office and has never been permanent. Skin lightening (hypopigmentation) is rarer still. Laser hair removal is very safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in New York at the correct setting.
