Liposuction in Staten Island and NYC

The liposuction procedure involves removing excess fat by eliminating the fat cells completely, a process that can be completed in a single day and remains a highly effective way to tone and shape your body to match your aesthetic goals, with visible results right away.

Even if you’re at or near your ideal body weight, there can still be parts of your body that simply don’t respond to diet and exercise. A liposuction procedure at the Allure Plastic Surgery center in NYC can contour these problematic areas, creating a natural-looking, svelte appearance.

It’s important to keep in mind that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. You should be at or near your ideal body weight, and should be maintaining healthy lifestyle habits before choosing liposuction to eliminate the parts of your body that simply won’t respond to consistent healthy living.

The Liposuction Surgical Procedure

Your surgeon will perform the procedure in a fully equipped, AAAHC accredited surgery center, and you’ll undergo sedation through a board-certified anesthesiologist to make sure you remain completely comfortable. The liposuction in New York City procedure is relatively simple and usually takes no more than two hours.

The surgeon performing the liposuction in our NYC office will have you stand and mark the problem areas with a pen where the fat will be removed. These markings will help guide the surgeon throughout the procedure.

Once your sedation is complete, the doctor will make tiny incisions to the area where your fat will be removed. These small incisions will be anywhere from two to three millimeters in size.

When the procedure is over, the surgeon will suture the small incisions that will either dissolve or require removal in a week. Most patients don’t see scarring once the incisions have properly healed.

It’s often recommended to wear compression garments to the areas that received treatment. These garments are worn for a month usually until the swelling resolves.

What Are the Different Types of Liposuction?

Most liposuction involves a thin, hollow tube, which is known as a cannula. When sedated, the surgeon will insert the cannula into the treatment area, which is used to loosen and remove unwanted fat cells. A vibrational function helps to loosen the fat and, aiding in its removal, as the cannula uses vacuum suction to pull it from the treatment area.

We also provide an alternate type of liposuction called SmartLipo. This method uses a laser to heat the fat to help with its removal. The SmartLipo method will heat up and liquefy the targeted fat cells, making it easier for the doctor to suction out the fat.

Liposuction Recovery: What to Expect

After the liposuction procedure, you’ll likely notice a bit of bruising and swelling in the treatment area, which is completely normal. The soreness typically fades within a few days, and the bruising usually dissipates in about two weeks.

You’ll want to arrange for a friend to help you leave, and stay the night with you to help with your recovery during the first few days. It’s important that you wear compression garments for up to a month to minimize swelling and generally help the treatment area to heal.

Most patients can typically return to work within a few days, but it’s best to wait a few weeks before you start any vigorous exercise (it’s important to first speak with your surgeon before starting any exercise program). When it comes to the recovery process, it’s important to follow up with your doctor setting up a follow-up visit within five to seven days after surgery, to ensure all is well. A second visit is recommended a few weeks after the surgery, and your third visit a few months after.

After the procedure has been completed and the swelling has gone down, you’ll notice a more toned, sleeker look to your body. You’ll want to maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve your results, which will last for years to come, provided that proper diet and exercise are followed.

How Long Do the Liposuction Results Last?

Unlike cosmetic injections that might last only a few months, liposuction removes fat cells forever. Keep in mind that this type of procedure is not a weight loss solution and you shouldn’t see it as such. Making sure you live a healthy life, eat clean, and exercise often is important to the overall health of most individuals.

We know living in New York can be quite busy, with so many unhealthy options, but eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle is critical. The liposuction procedure in our New York City office will provide a lifelong change in your appearance and it's recommended you work to maintain good health.

When the liposuction is complete, you should notice a more slimmed-down appearance, contoured to the look you were wanting. Since the fat cells were sucked out through the cannula, these results will most likely last forever. Try to avoid gaining additional weight after your procedure and when you feel you’re ready, consult your doctor for approval on starting an exercise program.

Who Qualifies for Liposuction at Your NYC Office?

If you’re wanting the very best liposuction in NYC, first start by setting up an appointment through a reputable doctor.  Dr. Heller brings over thirty years of experience and can help identify if you’re a qualified candidate or not. Here are a few reasons one might be a good candidate for this type of procedure.

When the procedure is done, it’s important to maintain a healthy eating lifestyle and exercise often. An ideal candidate for someone who might want liposuction would be those wanting to eliminate fat deposits from their body that don’t seem to go away through diet and exercise. Keep in mind; this procedure will not get rid of cellulite.

  • People who might have trouble contouring their "problem areas" that diet and exercise don't seem to fix. These are often far areas that won't change no matter how much you exercise. These problem areas often see change when you get this work done.
  • Liposuction is for those who are slightly over their ideal body weight, and just need a little extra help.  Always keep in mind that this type of procedure should not be looked at as a weight loss solution. The procedure was designed to reshape the body and give the patient a better, sleeker-looking appearance.
  • People who have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure and aren’t seeking perfection. Getting this type of work done will help with certain problem areas and will provide improvement. But it’s important to understand that results will never be perfect.
  • You’re doing it for yourself, not to fulfill another person’s wants or needs.
  • Patients with good skin elasticity are ideal candidates for liposuction. When patients have the right skin type, it can conform to the new contours of the body after the fat deposits are taken out by the cannula. It’s good to have good skin elasticity and muscle tone before considering this type of procedure.

What Are the Risks Associated with NYC Liposuction?

The complications from this type of procedure are very minimal. Although risks are extremely rare, some risks to exit such as bleeding, changes in skin sensation, infection, swelling, allergic reaction to anesthesia may occur.

It’s important to go with an experienced plastic surgeon that is up to date with the latest plastic surgery techniques. Always do a search on the NYSED site to verify the license of the surgeon. By doing this, it will ensure that the procedure goes well, and that recovery time is kept to a minimum.

It’s important to note that plastic surgeons skills will vary greatly; it’s always a good idea to do thorough research and go with an experienced plastic surgeon that has decades of experience. Having an experienced surgeon perform the procedure will reduce any possible risk. Having the best liposuction Manhattan has to offer, is important in minimizing any possible risk.

Liposuction FAQ

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Having liposuction done should not be looked at as a weight-loss method, but rather a means of removing unwanted or stubborn fat deposits from the body that don’t respond well to eating healthy or exercise.

How much does this cost?

The cost of these procedures can vary on many different factors. Body type, aesthetic objectives, the type of liposuction, how many different areas are having fat removed, the type of anesthesia, the cost of the operating facility are just a few things that are considered to give the patient an accurate quote. Please consult your plastic surgeon for a consultation and a more accurate quote.

Will this remove cellulite?

These types of procedures are not a method to remove cellulite. The procedure is often used to improve the contour of the body by removing stubborn or unwanted fat deposits. Other methods do exist for the removal of cellulite, and it’s best to talk with your surgeon about this.

Will I have bad scarring?

The surgeon that performs your procedure will take care to ensure that scarring is very minimal. A skilled surgeon should be able to make it not noticeable after healing. The length of the incisions done by the surgeon are small (two to three millimeters), and a skilled surgeon should be able to put them in discreet places.

Why would a surgeon want to add liposuction to an arm lift?

Brachioplasty – more commonly known as an arm lift – is a great procedure for resolving loose, excess skin. It reduces excess skin and fat residing between the armpit and elbow, and contours your arm, giving it a smoother appearance. If the skin is tight, liposuction is a good option for reducing a lot of fat. They can typically be done simultaneously, but you can’t be too aggressive with the liposuction at this time because it’s important to maintain healthy blood supply to the skin so the incision used for the brachioplasty can heal as nicely as possible. Sometimes it’s best to perform the liposuction first, which allows the surgeon to achieve good excision of the skin.

Is an arm lift the right treatment for sagging arm skin following weight loss?

When someone loses a massive amount of weight, excess, loose skin typically results in different areas of their body. Most of these patients will have loose skin on their arms, which makes them an ideal candidate for brachioplasty – also known as an arm lift. Liposuction is only a good option for people who have sagging skin if they have a good amount of fat present. Brachioplasty requires an incision that begins in the armpit or underarm area and runs along the inner part of your arm down to the elbow, which allows your surgeon to remove the excess skin and somewhat conceal the scar. Then using the most advanced techniques, he/she will close the incision, which should heal into a thin white line.

Do I need to lose weight prior to my arm lift procedure?

Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure specifically designed to reduce flabby and sagging skin from the upper arms. It also helps to stop underarm skin rashes and irritation caused by this skin. Prior to an arm lift or any kind of body contouring procedure, it’s best to lose as much weight as possible. This allows the plastic surgeon to remove an optimal amount of loose skin, which gives even better results. It’s best to use a plastic surgeon in New York who has lots of experience with contouring the arms, and closely follow their guidelines.

After SmartLipo will my fat come back?

If you are considering undergoing a procedure to remove your excess fat, SmartLipo is a great option. It yields the best results when used to treat small areas and only requires local anesthesia. Once the fat is removed, it is permanently removed. However, if you don’t maintain a healthy diet or exercise plan, any remaining fat cells can enlarge, making it appear as if the fat has returned. When combined with a healthy diet, SmartLipo produces wonderful results that have a high rate of patient satisfaction.

How long do you wear compression garments after SmartLipo?

Following SmartLipo, we advise that compression garments be worn for at least three to six weeks. The pressure applied by compression garments helps the skin heal tighter in the areas that were treated. The chance of severe bruising is reduced with proper wear of the garments. While some patients heal fine within only a week of wearing the garments, wearing it as much as possible for six weeks ensures that you achieve the best results.

Is liposuction a requirement for an arm lift procedure?

Liposuction is a specialized procedure that reduces fat in specific areas of the body. Brachioplasty is different in the fact that it removes excess skin, and contours your arm to give it a more toned appearance. Since you are looking into getting an arm lift done, you should know that liposuction could be performed at the same time if you need it. The best way to identify what type of procedure or combination of procedures you need for sure is to participate in a consultation with an experienced NY plastic surgeon.

How can I reduce the excess skin in my arms?

It’s not unlikely that a patient will have some sagging because of their poor skin elasticity. Upper arm skin is thin, so it’s more common in this area because it doesn’t contract as well following liposuction. If there is a good amount of loose skin to be removed, then a brachioplasty (arm lift) procedure may be necessary. Brachioplasty involves removing excess skin with an incision that starts under the upper arm area and runs down to the elbow.

I’m considering lipo for my fatty mons pubis. Are there sexual complications or risks involved with such a procedure?

Liposuction is the best solution to rid your mons pubis of unwanted fat. It requires local anesthesia and there is little to no down time involved. Aside from some minor swelling and soreness, there are no serious risks involved. Your sexual capabilities are not directly affected by this surgery. We do suggest that you attempt to get as close to your target weight as possible prior to your procedure.

Is heat or ice best for post-liposuction swelling?

While heat or ice may make you feel better, they don’t really help to reduce swelling. Patients are typically given a compression garment to wear, which will help to reduce swelling over time and encourage skin to heal tighter. The swelling will take time to subside so in this case, patience is a virtue. As long as you continue to follow your post op instructions and wear your garments as requested by your surgeon, your results, healing time and comfort level should be typical.

How soon can I tan after liposuction?

The healing after liposuction is relatively short. It often takes less than a week before you can resume everyday activities and return to work. Our physicians do not advocate tanning but we will say that it would be better to wait a couple of weeks after surgery or until all the bruising subsides. You should also shield the liposuction incisions from UV exposure for a month after the procedure to aid healing and to decrease redness.

Is there anything that can be done for excess fat above the pubic region?

Liposuction is an excellent option for improving the area you are concerned with. Since the subcutaneous skin of that area doesn’t contain any major vessel or nerves it is very safe. We can also use an abdominoplasty to improve the excess skin and fat of the tummy and at the same time to achieve great overall improvement. As long as you are in good health, you should be a good candidate for both procedures.
