Facial Fat Transfer in Staten Island

The face often shows the first signs of aging. Lost volume and deep wrinkling are two of them.

Fat injection, also called facial fat transfer, restores facial volume without surgery. Fat is taken from areas of the body where it is not wanted and placed into hollowed areas of the face. Because the fat is the patient's own, there is no risk of allergic reaction, and the result looks natural.

Facial fat transfer in Staten Island is also effective for patients who have experienced lipoatrophy, the loss of fat tissue in the face due to subcutaneous injection of insulin during the treatment of diabetes. Fat injections fill the sunken areas and restore face contour. Both children and adults with any of these conditions are good candidates for fat injections.

Benefits

Benefits of Facial Fat Transfer

Facial fat injections eliminate smile lines, marionette lines, frown lines, furrows, wrinkles and hollows on the face. Lips that have lost shape and volume can also be restored with fat injections as well as depressions in the face due to acne scars.

The most common benefits of facial fat transfer include:

  • Reduced downtime
  • More economical than synthetic fillers
  • Permanent or long-lasting results
  • Local anaesthesia

The Facial Fat Injection Procedure

Fat injection is usually done under local anesthesia. The type and amount depend on how much fat is being extracted. For anxious patients the doctor may offer an oral sedative, though it is not normally needed.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in three steps:

Fat Removal

The first step in rejuvenating your appearance with fat injections is harvesting the fat for the procedure. Here, the surgeon removes excess fat from the donor site, which can be the thighs, saddle bags, hips, buttocks, abdomen, or jowls.

Using thin cannulas specifically designed for liposuction, we remove fat from your outer hips, love handles, or abdomen, providing a sleeker contour to that area while obtaining enough fat for your facial injections.

To collect as many healthy fat cells as possible, very low suction liposuction is used to limit damage to the cells.

Isolation of Fat Cells

Once the fat is harvested, it is processed to remove impurities and prepare it for injection.

During this process, the fat obtained is spun in a centrifuge at a high speed to remove any liquid. The damaged fat cells are also removed at this stage.

The cleansed, undamaged fat cells are filtered and passed to the next stage.

Re-Injection of Fat

Finally, the healthy fat cells are injected into the targeted sites on the face, buttocks, or other body parts. The surgeon uses a separate hypodermic syringe to inject the fat cells deeply into the site until the desired results are achieved.

After your procedure, the remainder of your harvested fat can be kept in a frozen state for future use if you want to return throughout the year for additional injections to ensure long-lasting results.

Your Facial Fat Injection Results

Fat injections take about one hour, with a recovery of one to two days. Any bruising or swelling at the donor and recipient sites is minimal and fades within a few days. Discomfort can be managed with pain medication. Follow-up injections take about five minutes and need practically no recovery.

As with any medical procedure, certain post-operative instructions help recovery:

  • Wearing surgical tape on the facial areas for at least five days
  • Sleeping on your back with the head elevated for one week after fat injection
  • Not scrubbing your face for the first two weeks, only soft washing
  • Avoiding strenuous activities for at least one week after the treatment.
  • A follow up visit on day five, month one, and month four.

More Info about Facial Fat Transfer

As a cosmetic operation, fat injection is not covered by health insurance unless it is medically essential. Cost varies with the amount of fat transferred, the areas treated, the type of anesthesia, and the surgeon's fee.

Fat injection results last longer than dermal fillers. Results vary from patient to patient, but a properly performed procedure can last for years, sometimes permanently.

You will see results almost immediately. With a skilled surgeon, they can be permanent.
