Six-year-old Gage Berger was being mercilessly teased by children at school who told him he looked like an elf and had weird ears. Gage’s mother Kallie Berger told Inside Edition that “he just gets really down on himself and he thinks, ‘I’m not good enough.’”

In general, plastic surgery is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18, but otoplasty, ear reshaping surgery, is more common in children. Over 9,000 ear reshaping surgeries were performed last year for children across the United States. Six years old is the youngest a child should normally undergo otoplasty because by age six, the ears have reached their adult size.
