Manhattan, Long Island, New York City, NY – Kids can be cruel, and there is often nothing we can do to protect our children from it. However, if the source of the teasing is due to oddly sized ears, cosmetic surgery can be the answer.
Six-year-old Gage Berger was being mercilessly teased by children at school who told him he looked like an elf and had weird ears. Gage’s mother Kallie Berger told Inside Edition that “he just gets really down on himself and he thinks, ‘I’m not good enough.’”
Fearing that Gage’s self-esteem would be permanently damaged from a completely correctable cosmetic issue, Gage’s parents chose to take him to a plastic surgeon for an ear reshaping operation.

In general, plastic surgery is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18, but otoplasty, ear reshaping surgery, is more common in children. Over 9,000 ear reshaping surgeries were performed last year for children across the United States. Six years old is the youngest a child should normally undergo otoplasty because by age six, the ears have reached their adult size.
Many adults also choose otoplasty later in life after enduring a childhood of bullying and many years of feeling self-conscious about their appearance.
