Liposuction and SmartLipo
Proudly serving New York City, Manhattan, Long Island & nearby areas of New York
Liposuction is an excellent tool that allows surgeons to artistically sculpt problem areas by removing excess fat. Some people find it difficult to shape certain areas of their bodies through diet and exercise and utilize liposuction to help them maintain a figure that reflects their healthy lifestyle.
This procedure can be used for either treating a specific area or can be paired with a complementary process to achieve a significant change to one's appearance, especially since it helps take care of the loose skin caused by excessive fat deposits.
The stomach, hips, and inner or outer thighs tend to be the areas most people dislike and have treated through liposuction. The buttocks, knees, arms and chin also respond nicely to liposuction or smartlipo. Why Should You Get Liposuction?
People may choose to get liposuction to eliminate fat deposits from their body that refuse to go away from exercise and diet. It often happens that no matter how much you work out and eat healthily, some parts of your body just never want to slim down. This usually occurs when our body has a genetic predisposition to store stubborn fat in these areas. For some people, it can be in the thighs or the love handles. Others may have stubborn fat on the underside of their arms or under their chin.
This surgery is supposed to successfully remove the stubborn fat cells that do not respond to fat burning workouts. Lipo allows you to get a slimmer body with the perfect contours that enhance your overall appearance. Liposuction was once the single most popular procedure for weight loss among men and second most popular among women, after breast augmentation.
With the rise of cosmetic surgery procedures, people are now increasingly "going under the knife" to get the body of their dreams.
Are You A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
Even though there is no "right age" for being a liposuction candidate, older patients struggling with excess fat and loss of skin elasticity might not have results as good as a younger patient would. Otherwise, this surgical procedure is appropriate for both women and men. The ideal candidate is the one who is just slightly above average weight and not overly obese.
Also, it's important for a liposuction patient to have realistic expectations from the surgery results. Remember, this is NOT a method of weight loss and cannot be used to counter the effects of obesity. It can only be used to treat fat in areas that are resistant to exercise and diet, and are disproportional with the rest of the body features.
That being said, patients with cellulite might not be good candidates because of their skin quality in those areas, but that's something you can discuss with one of our qualified surgeons during your consultation.
Getting Started with Liposuction
Our Smartlipo MPX Laser Body Sculpting Workstation is ideal for treatment of small areas of localized fat deposits, especially those with lax overlying skin. An added bonus to its fat melting power is the ability for the Multiplex technology to coagulate and tighten tissue. It also stimulates collagen production to help your body look its best.
We urge you to take advantage of your free consultation with Dr. Heller, or Dr. Cuber at one of our offices in New York City. They will be happy to discuss your options and address any concerns you may have. A thorough assessment of your body may reveal that the addition of another contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck is needed to tighten excess skin to provide the results you desire. Liposuction body contouring can be safely added to many different body contouring procedures to maximize improvement and satisfaction.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
The procedure is relatively simple and is usually completed in less than two hours. It is performed in one of our AAAHC accredited surgery centers in New York City.
The process begins from the time you arrive at the surgical center and given anesthetic. The type of anesthetic you'd be administered depends on factors like your body type, the type of liposuction you'll be getting, and the total volume of fat that is to be removed. The anesthetic may be local or general.
First, the surgeon will make tiny incisions in the surgical site, and then flush them with a sterile solution to keep the bleeding to a minimum. Liposuction is performed by using a medical device called a Cannula, which is made of stainless steel and resembles the shape of a thin tube. The Cannula is used to loosen the fat deposits, which are then suctioned out either from a syringe attached to the cannula or with a vacuum-like device.
In some cases, the cannula is attached to a small motor that makes the vacillation procedure more convenient. Vacillation helps in breaking up of the fat, which is known as power-assisted liposuction. Surgeons may also choose to use laser or ultrasonic waves to break down the fat, and then remove it using the cannula.
Liposuction, when performed correctly, is extremely safe. Your safety is our utmost concern and extreme caution and attention to detail is given to each and every procedure performed at our facilities. The following terminology will help you understand a little more about our state-of-the-art liposuction technology.
- Tumescent Liposuction: infused fluid breaks down fat, assisting with removal.
- Ultrasonic Liposuction: Transmitted pressure waves penetrate the skin to dissolve fat for easier elimination and removal.
- Laser Liposuction (SmartLipo™): The heat of the laser probe liquefies fat making the removal process easier, there by speeding up recovery.
Once the surgery is over, the patient is taken to a recovery room where the doctors will place a compression garment over the surgical site to let the skin tighten over the smooth area. Some patients are also given drains to help with fluid buildup, but these are removed naturally in few days. Patients that get liposuction on an outpatient basis may even get to go home the same day.
After your surgery, you’ll typically feel some mild discomfort or a mild burning sensation and will be prescribed painkillers to help you deal with any post-operative pain. Although bruising and swelling is often present following surgery, pain is typically minimal. It's natural to experience some amount of pain and soreness in the area, which some say is quite similar to the soreness caused by working out.
The signs of bruising and swelling usually dissipates after around a week. Most patients can go back to work and resume their regular activities within 7 to 10 days of the liposuction surgery. However, they are advised to keep the compression garment on till the time the surgeon permits to remove it and are advised to stay away from the rigorous activity during the recovery period.
When Can You Expect To See The Results Of The Surgery?
It may take some time for the effects of liposuction to become visible because of post-operative swelling as the tissues may continue to shift as the skin continues to tighten for a couple of weeks after surgery.
While the effects of liposuction are permanent, meaning the fat cells removed from the area of your body will not grow back, undergoing this procedure does not mean that you will not gain weight, so proper exercise and diet are of essence after the surgery has successfully taken place.
Permanent improvement can be seen as the skin tightens but expectations should be reasonable. Liposuction alone cannot transform a very heavy midsection into a sculpted abdomen. However, combining liposuction with healthy diet and exercise has the potential to make an extreme improvement in your physique.
What Are The Risks With This Procedure?
Liposuction is one of the most common and popular plastic surgery procedures performed in America which means that incidences of complications are extremely rare. That being said, some risks do exist such as bleeding, allergic reaction to anesthesia, changes in skin sensation, and others which can be minimized by choosing a reputable and highly experienced plastic surgeon.
Surgeons who are up to date with the latest plastic surgery techniques will ensure the procedure goes smoothly and you get satisfactory results with a minimal time of recovery. If you are opposed to surgery, you might consider CoolSculpting®, which is a non surgical reduction of fat by freezing the desired area . While it isn’t a replacement for liposuction, CoolSculpting does make favorable enhancements over time.
