Abdominal Etching

Proudly serving New York City, Manhattan, Long Island & nearby areas of New York

You work out all the time. You eat right. You take pride in your physical appearance. In short, you do everything you're supposed to do, and yet you've found you just can't achieve the sculpted, chiseled abdominal appearance you desire.

This is a problem for many Manhattan and Staten Island residents. A thin, stubborn layer of fat can cover the abdominal muscles even on the healthiest patients.

Luckily, there's a solution. Our board-certified plastic surgeons can use liposuction to carefully and strategically remove fat from the stomach area, accentuating the muscles and creating the “six pack” appearance that so many men value so highly. This process, known as abdominal etching, is both popular and safe.

What is the Abdominal Etching Procedure?

The abdominal etching procedure is quite commonly performed, and it's very simple. Performed under anesthesia, abdominal etching takes about 90 minutes and then you're done.

Our plastic surgeons use SmartLipo®, an innovative version of the liposuction procedure that uses lasers to liquefy fat cells before they are removed. This process greatly reduces trauma to the surrounding tissue (the cells are much easier to remove with SmartLipo®) and cuts recovery time as well.

Using these tools, we strategically remove belly fat in order to sharply define the contours of the abdominal muscles. This gives the abdominal region a “rippling” or chiseled appearance.

Recovery Expectations

It's important that you take enough time for recovery. Fortunately, most patients are able to return to work within 24 tp 48 hours of the abdominal etching procedure. You can expect some bruising and swelling in the immediate aftermath of the procedure, though this usually fades within a week or so after your surgery.

Generally speaking, you can expect to wear a velcro compression garment around your waist for about two weeks after your abdominal etching procedure. This garment keeps swelling down and quickens recovery.

Our plastic surgeons will describe your recovery timeline in more detail in person, but it's important to be patient after your procedure. It can take around six months for the full results of the abdominal etching procedure to show up, though you will see gradual improvement throughout the recovery process.
